Péter Magyar says the Tisza government will take every necessary step to recover state assets and hold those responsible accountable, while continuing to respect the rule of law. In a Facebook post published on Sunday, the prime minister also signaled possible legislative amendments aimed at shortening investigations and criminal proceedings. Responding to criticism surrounding the NVVH, Magyar wrote that the government would not bow to political pressure and would not allow the credibility of the office to be undermined. According to him, the Tisza government has already fulfilled several important pledges during its first 110 days in office, while continuing efforts to recover public assets and strengthen the institutional framework for accountability.

The Government Could Amend Laws to Speed Up Proceedings

In his Sunday Facebook post, Péter Magyar wrote that the government would take every necessary decision to recover state assets that had previously left public control and to ensure accountability where criminal responsibility is established through legal proceedings. The prime minister also raised the possibility of legislative changes aimed at reducing the length of investigations and criminal cases.

At the same time, Magyar stressed that speeding up proceedings must not come at the expense of legal safeguards. In his view, accountability can only be credible if the law and the rights of those involved are fully respected throughout the process.

Magyar Responded to the Controversy Surrounding the NVVH

The central focus of the prime minister’s post was the controversy surrounding the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office, known by its Hungarian abbreviation NVVH. Parliament elected Anna Róza Unger as president of the office on Friday, a decision that also triggered criticism among some Tisza supporters.

According to Magyar, the creation of the NVVH represents the fulfillment of one of the government’s most important promises. He said the cabinet’s goal is to build a strong and professionally committed institution that is independent of political influence and capable of uncovering cases involving public assets.

Magyar Says Fidesz Has an Interest in Undermining the Office

The prime minister claimed that Fidesz and other politicians whom he described as “defeated” have an interest in making the work of the NVVH more difficult and damaging its credibility. He presented this as a political claim and did not provide specific evidence in the post to substantiate it.

Magyar also wrote that several conspiracy theories and false accusations had appeared around the office in recent days, but said he did not want to address them individually. He nevertheless made clear that the government would not allow what he described as a deliberate attempt to discredit the NVVH.

“The Most Popular Decision Is Not Always the Right One”

Responding to criticism of Anna Unger’s election, the prime minister argued that governing cannot simply mean following public opinion at every moment. He wrote that “the most popular decision is not always the right one” and said elected leaders must be prepared to take responsibility even when a decision causes short-term opposition.

Magyar said members of the Tisza government and its MPs had committed themselves to four years of public service and had taken an oath to serve their country. According to him, they make their decisions with that responsibility in mind, even when those decisions may not appear popular at the time.

The Public Does Not Directly Choose Every State Leader

Magyar also emphasized that Tisza had never promised that the public would directly vote on every senior appointment. He cited positions such as the head of the tax authority, hospital directors, railway executives and senior judicial posts as examples of offices that are not filled through direct public voting.

The prime minister argued that responsibility for such appointments lies with those who are legally empowered to make them. He added that if public opinion directly decided every appointment, law, budgetary matter or tax issue, the country would become impossible to govern.

Those Who Distance Themselves From Tisza Have the Right to Do So

Magyar also addressed voters who have become disappointed with Tisza because of Anna Unger’s election. He wrote that if someone chooses to distance themselves from the party over a personnel decision they find unacceptable, they have every right to do so.

However, the prime minister made clear that the government does not intend to reverse the decision simply because of political pressure. He said the cabinet would not compromise either its oath or its commitments and that, as far as he was concerned, the matter was closed.

Magyar Also Listed the Government’s Achievements From Its First 110 Days

In the same post, Péter Magyar gave a lengthy assessment of the Tisza government’s first 110 days in office. He claimed that the cabinet had already fulfilled more than one hundred campaign commitments and had succeeded in unlocking 6,000 billion forints in previously endangered European Union funds.

The prime minister also said the government had improved the budget position by 1,000 billion forints. In addition, he claimed that nearly 3,000 billion forints in public assets had already been recovered, while hundreds of billions had been saved on investment projects that the government considered overpriced.

Magyar Highlighted Several Social Measures

Among the government’s achievements, Magyar mentioned the 100,000-forint back-to-school allowance and cuts in VAT on firewood and prescription medicines. He also wrote that funding for the social firewood program had been doubled and that the minimum old-age pension would rise to 120,000 forints from 2027.

Magyar presented these measures as evidence that the government had delivered a number of tangible commitments within a relatively short period. He linked this record to the controversy surrounding Unger, arguing that one disputed personnel decision should not overshadow the government’s broader performance.

He Also Spoke About Three Heatwaves and Two Energy Crises

According to the prime minister, the country successfully managed three heatwaves and two energy crises during the government’s first 110 days. He said these challenges had been handled through what he described as unprecedented cooperation and also referred to a major construction project on the Danube completed within two weeks.

The latter referred to the emergency intervention near the Paks Nuclear Power Plant after exceptionally low water levels in the Danube threatened its operation. The government began construction of an underwater sill in August, with the first phase completed ahead of schedule.

Magyar Says Institutional Reforms Will Continue

The prime minister also highlighted that the leadership of numerous state institutions and public bodies had been replaced, with many new leaders selected through open application processes. Further major appointments within the state institutional system are also expected.

Magyar said the government’s goal remains the creation of a “functioning and humane Hungary.” He concluded by saying that, from his perspective, the debate over Anna Unger’s appointment is closed and that the government will continue its work.
